The town of Dolton in Illinois voted Monday to hire former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot as a “special investigator” to investigate Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard.

Starting Tuesday, Lightfoot will be paid $400 an hour to gather information about Henyard’s alleged spending and financial mismanagement, as well as “any state and federal violations.”

Before Monday’s vote, Lightfoot said she understood residents want to go in a different direction than Henyard and promised to “follow the facts wherever they lead.”

At the end of her investigation, Lightfoot will present a report to the village of Dolton about her findings. The report’s conclusions will determine what happens beyond that.

Trustees also voted again on issues that Dolton’s mayor had previously vetoed and on payment to vendors and invoices that have not yet been paid by the Village.

Monday’s vote was held off-site at the Park District building as it was not an official Town Board meeting. It was also moved there to accommodate residents who wanted to attend.

The monthly town meeting of the village of Dolton, Illinois, once again made headlines last week for bitter clashes with the scandal-plagued mayor.

Henyard has been accused of crimes ranging from arming police in retaliatory business raids to spending taxpayer money on luxuries like trips to Las Vegas. Last month, Henyard reportedly vetoed the board’s resolution to investigate his spending for alleged misuse of funds.

While the FBI has reportedly already begun investigating Henyard for allegedly misusing his local police force, the board resolution called for the FBI to further investigate his spending of city money.
