Nine people were hospitalized after about 200 inmates rushed correctional officers at a Southern California prison.
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, eight correctional officers and one incarcerated man were injured during the violent avalanche at Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, California.
Authorities said officers were escorting an inmate through the prison for a contraband investigation. “Approximately 200 imprisoned people, in the courtyard, ran towards the officers, attacking them with fists and stones.”
After firing a warning round from a rifle, officers used “chemical agents and non-lethal impact rounds” to subdue the prisoner.
